Reimagining Urban Living

Imagine your neighborhood extending from the street and into the sky with elevated streets, plazas, and parks! Z-aXis City creates vibrant, interconnected multi-level communities.
By 2050, two billion people will move to cities around the world. Our current sprawling, unsustainable cities can't handle the growth. We need a new way, the Z-aXis way.
Inspired by both nature and technology, Z-aXis City reaches for the sky with a bold vision for sustainable and healthy vertical urban living.

Z-aXis City is a visionary urban design concept that reimagines the city as a multi-layered, three-dimensional ecosystem. Inspired by the efficiency and interconnectedness of natural systems like the rainforest, Z-aXis City proposes a network of Blended Bridge Buildings that integrate seamlessly with elevated streets, plazas, and parks. This innovative approach addresses the challenges of urban sprawl, congestion, and environmental degradation by maximizing space utilization, promoting sustainable technologies, and fostering a vibrant, interconnected community.
Z-aXis City offers a bold vision for the future of urban living, where cities reach for the sky while staying grounded in the principles of nature and human connection.
Breaking free from the grid Z-aXis City aims to overcome the sprawl, congestion, and isolation caused by conventional city planning
Embracing the third dimension It emphasizes building upwards and creating interconnected multi-layered urban spaces
Inspiration from nature and technology It draws inspiration from both the rainforest's ecosystem and advanced bridge design to create sustainable, efficient, and space-maximizing urban environments
Interconnectedness It envisions a city where homes, businesses, and public spaces are seamlessly linked by elevated streets, plazas, and parks, fostering a vibrant community
Human scale and practicality Z-aXis City is designed to be human-scale, respecting individual needs, property rights, and economic realities

3D Interconnectedness A multi-layered urban fabric with seamless connections between buildings and public spaces
Blended Bridge Buildings Innovative structures that merge the functions of a bridge and a building, creating a continuous, multi-layered urban structure
Elevated Public Spaces A network of sky-loops, plazas, and parks that extend vertically
Integrated Green Spaces Abundant vegetation and natural elements woven throughout the city
Smart Technology Advanced systems for resource management, transportation, and communication
Z-aXis City's vertical design significantly reduces urban sprawl by maximizing land use efficiency
By building upwards instead of outwards, it protects valuable natural resources and minimizes the environmental impact associated with horizontal development

Develop the Z-aXis Code to define the fundamental three-dimensional urban principles

Z-aXis City is a visionary proposal to create a multi-layered, three-dimensional urban ecosystem that reimagines city life. Our core belief is that cities should be designed to enhance human connection and well-being while drastically minimizing environmental impact
For thousands of years, cities have been built on a two-dimensional grid. This obsolete approach cannot handle the growth of modern megacities, leading to crippling congestion, sprawl, isolation, and environmental degradation. Z-aXis City offers a solution by embracing the third dimension (the z-axis) to create a more efficient and sustainable urban form
We are designing for the reality that over 2 billion people will move to cities in the next 25 years. Z-aXis City is a blueprint for a new urban growth model capable of accommodating this influx in a more sustainable way
Z-aXis City draws inspiration from the convergence of nature and technology. From nature, we observe the rainforest as a model for sustainable, multi-layered, and vibrant ecosystems. From technology, we are inspired by advanced aircraft design, specifically the Blended Wing Body concept, to promote structural efficiency, maximize space, and minimize environmental impact
We emulate the rainforest's four layers:
The Blended Bridge Building is a new building typology that unifies the functions of a building and a bridge into a single, cohesive structure15. Like the blended wing body aircraft, this design maximizes interior space for diverse uses (transportation, commercial, residential) and uses existing technologies to achieve a revolutionary form
Ad Buildings are linked by an extensive, interconnected tapestry of elevated streets, plazas, parks, and public spaces17. This creates multi-layered communities where the neighborhood literally extends into the sky d an answer to this item.
No. Z-aXis City is not a utopian megastructure. It avoids the pitfalls of past schemes like inhuman scale, idealism vs. reality conflict, and architectural hubris. It is designed at a familiar human scale, respects property rights, and works within the economic rrealities of urban development
The Z-aXis Code is the development code that will guide the implementation of this innovative, three-dimensional urban system. It will integrate fundamental principles of urban design within a 3D context to ensure all future development adheres to the core principles
Z-aXis City is currently a concept. The next steps are the

Join architect and ASU Distinguished Innovation Fellow Neil Urban as he unveils a revolutionary vision for sustainable, multi-layered, three-dimensional cities. In this presentation from Arizona State University's Distinguished Innovation Fellows program, Urban shares his ambitious project to create a more interconnected and resilient urban habitat. Learn about how Z-aXis City is designed to combat urban sprawl, congestion, and environmental challenges through innovative 3D urban planning.
NEIL URBAN recently retired from a 25-year career with Maricopa County and the State of Arizona in Phoenix, AZ where he applied his expertise as both a registered architect and a certified planner to a wide range of projects and programs. During his tenure he served as the County’s Long Range Planning Manager in the Planning and Development Department and also as the Facility Planning Manager and Energy Division Manager for the Facilities Management Department. His experience includes energy management, architectural planning and design, historic preservation, public participation, project management, regional land use planning, aviation planning, economic development and long-range transportation planning. Neil managed the planning process for the Maricopa County Comprehensive Plan, the Maricopa County Strategic Facilities Plan and the LEED Certification for the Superior Court Tower, the largest LEED Gold certified public building in Arizona. He is a graduate of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Arizona State University.
Neil developed Z-aXis City as a member of the inaugural cohort of the Arizona State University Distinguished Innovation Fellows program. The DIF provides executives and professionals over 55 the opportunity and support to explore social innovations. Fellows learn, develop, prototype, and launch ideas for global improvement, taking ASU courses on social impact and design thinking. The year-long program provides staff and faculty support, and access to ASU resources.
